A photo gallery with descriptions of some Native American uses

"We stopped short, struck still by the sight before us. Three thousand feet below an immense oblong white floor glistened between bare rocky walls. It shimmered with light, and the mountains were majestically high. Its stark brightness was dreadful and at the same time it was more beautiful than anything we had ever seen on the beautiful desert. Death Valley!"
Edna Brush Perkins, 1922

Desolate yet beautiful, Death Valley is a land of contradictions and extremes. From the lowest spot in the Western Hemisphere, 282 ft. below sea level, the land rises straight up 11,000 feet. In winter snow capped peaks loom over one of the hottest, driest spots on earth. Death Valley has been the setting for Wild West gold and silver rushes, for prospectors, gamblers and movie stars, for glamorous races and desperate treks, for 20 Mule Team Borax and for the incredible Death Valley Scotty with his famous Scotty's Castle. It has also been a life-giving place for Native American tribes like the Timbisha Shoshone and unique plants and animals.

Echoes Through Time: Death Valley is a gold medal award-winning experience of Death Valley unlike any other. Narrated by legendary western star Hugh O'Brian, Echoes Though Time: Death Valley celebrates this vast, rugged landscape and the search for treasure in the desert - in all its forms.

"It is not a valley of death, never was. It's Timbisha... very spiritual and powerful."
Pauline Estevez, Timbisha Shoshone Tribe.

Scotty's castle

Scotty's Castle: Tall Tales, and Tourists
Death Valley Scotty - legend, liar and showman - put Death Valley on the tourist map. Learn the true story of fabulous Scotty's Castle, the desert's greatest visitor attraction. Also find out how the Furnace Creek Inn and a television and radio show helped protect Death Valley for future generations.

A Native American's view of the Valley
"Ground on Fire" Native Americans called it. To the Timbisha Shoshone, the Valley is their home, a healing place of life. Meet tribal elders who tell the story of how the People came to the Valley, thrived in it and about their sacred relationship to the awesome landscape they call home.

Witness history come alive
From the day in 1849 that a lost pioneer casually picked up a piece of silver ore and fashioned a gunsight from it, Death Valley has been a magnet for fortune seekers of all types. Follow the heroism of the 49'ers to tales of tougher-than-Tombstone Panamint City, from 20 Mule Team Borax to the comic adventures of prospector Shorty Harris, plus interviews with Death Valley historians and authors LeRoy and Jean Johnson and much more, Echoes Through Time: Death Valley brings the Valley's stories to life.

Narrated by Western TV and Film Legend Hugh O'Brian
Actor Hugh O'Brian is best known for his role as frontier marshall Wyatt Earp. From 1955-61, O'Brian played the lead role on ABC television's series Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. Since then he has had important roles in The Shootist with John Wayne, Twins with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wyatt Earp: Return to Tombstone and numerous other films, TV shows and stage productions.

Following a 1958 visit with Dr. Albert Schweitzer in Africa, Mr. O'Brian created - and continues to guide - the Hugh O' Brian Youth Foundation (HOBY). HOBY is a program for outstanding High School sophomores that trains them for future leadership roles and "to think for themselves." Over 300,000 young people have participated in the 40+ years of HOBY's existence and many have grown up to be today's leaders in business, the arts and government.

"Echoes Through Time is a fascinating and visually stunning journey through one of America's most misunderstood landscapes...One of the best introductions to the life and history of Death Valley."

James M. Bryant, Curator of Natural History
Riverside Municipal Museum
Riverside, California

"The program did a nice job of blending the cultural and natural dimensions of the Death Valley region. It was nice to hear the Death Valley story as told by a number of members of the Park Service staff. Too often, NPS people are overlooked when our nation's important natural features and historic sites are depicted on film and television. The inclusion of the American Indian voice in describing the emotional dimension of the region was particularly exciting."

LeRoy Johnson

Co-author of "Escape From Death Valley"

"The whole story of Death Valley comes alive in ECHOES THROUGH TIME."
